Exam Night and Inclement Weather

Dear Fellow Officials,

The executive board has been monitoring the potential inclement weather parts of NYS could be hit with in the next 48 hours.

Our number one priority is the safety of all officials. We realize that some of the testing sites are in schools that may be closed due to the weather. If your testing site is closed, we ask that you contact Margaret Fraina, (Muggsy) at mugs82@aol.com, on Tuesday to let her know that your site is closed and when your make up date will be. If your site is not closed but you feel you would be putting your officials at risk by traveling to the site, please use your best judgment on whether you should reschedule the exam. Ideally the make up date should be within seven days of November 12, 2019.

For sites where the weather is not a factor we ask that you be extra vigilant with test security. For these sites, after you have administered the exam you will need to collect all exam materials. Officials are not to leave with a copy of the exam, the answers, or any rule reference sheets (hard copy or photos of). I realize this will take extra effort on your part and appreciate your dedication.

Once we have determined that all boards have completed the exam I will send you all an email so you can share the answers and rule references. At that time, the answers for all exams will also be posted on the NYSGBOA website.

Stay Safe,
Pat Cooney
NYSGBOA President

Welcome to NYSGBOA

The present NYSGBOA was first an organization of 16 boards and was affiliated with National Association of Girls and Women Sports (NAGWS). Irene Greco of the Utica Board was the first president. For many factors this association did not meet our needs, movement was made by a number of people to move away from this national organization, and in 1980 the present NYSGBOA was in place with Ann Gallagher of the Suffolk board our first president. This new organization was recognized by New York Public High School Athletic Association as the organization to officiate all women basketball contests.

By 1986, NYSGBOA had 24 boards across NYS with membership just over 1,900 officials. These past 10 years two boards divided memberships due to geographical factors and more demand for certified officials. Today we have 26 boards with membership hovering around 2,400.

There is much history to this organization, from ratifying our constitution three time, changing dress for contests, having 11 different presidents, with some individuals serving more then just one time as officers, for the organization these past 27 years. Our organization is stronger, possible by early mistakes, or better heads.
